"Making a Dream Come True"

Great Smoky Mountains National Park Adaptive Programs: June- September, 2024

Catalyst Sports was honored to return to Great Smoky Mountains National Park this year to host 6 adaptive programs including hiking, kayaking, and mountain biking, plus the first ever adaptive backcountry camping trip at the park! These ranger led, inclusive programs allowed visitors of all abilities to learn about the natural and cultural history of the park, while borrowing adaptive equipment if needed. Victoria Wallace, a participant on the backcountry camping trip, shared her joy and appreciation for the chance to reconnect with the outdoors, an experience she had once thought would no longer be possible.

“From an early age I remember hiking and camping and the joy and contentment I felt in the mountains. But when I ended up in a wheelchair that enjoyment was over. But with Catalyst Sports and the Great Smoky Mountains, the new program made it possible for me to once again get back to hiking and camping. The overnight camping trip I took with them was like making a dream come true! Thank you Catalyst Sports and the Great Smoky Mountains for making that which was impossible, possible again!”

Catalyst Sports also helped implement an online reservation system for park visitors to borrow a GRIT Freedom Chair. Reservations will resume in the spring of 2025, but GRIT chairs are currently available on a first come first serve basis at the Sugarlands Visitor’s Center. Call (865) 436-1200 or email bookings@catalystsports.org with any questions!

These programs were made possible by Friends of the Smokies and Kampgrounds of America. We want to say thank you to both groups for their generous support!

We look forward to continuing our partnership with the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to bring even more adaptive opportunities in the years to come. With each hike, paddle, and bike ride, we move closer to our vision of making outdoor adventures accessible to everyone.
